Part 1: Trauma - An Introduction
This reflection is part of a three‑part series exploring trauma from a holistic and faith‑centered perspective. Each post stands alone, yet together they form a gentle journey from understanding trauma, to recognising its imprint, to discovering how Scripture speaks into our pain.
Trauma touches far more lives than we often realise. It can arrive suddenly or unfold quietly over time, yet its impact reaches deep into the places where our sense of safety, identity, and meaning reside. When an experience overwhelms our ability to cope, the mind and body respond in ways that can shape how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we move through the world.
In chaplaincy and holistic support, we meet people at these tender intersections — where pain, confusion, faith, and resilience all sit side by side. Understanding trauma is not simply a clinical exercise; it is an act of compassion. It allows us to recognise the hidden weight someone may be carrying and to offer presence that is steady, grounded, and humane.
This opening reflection begins a wider exploration of trauma: what it is, how it affects us, and how healing becomes possible.
